RESUME CHECKLIST
Writing your resume can sometimes feel tedious and difficult because of all the details you have to remember to put in. Indeed, there are a lot of other things people would rather do than write their resumes. To help you out, we offer this checklist you can go through when trying to write your resume yourself.
Does Your Resume Look Professional?
Does your email address look professional? Only name and family name please, NO numbers.
Have you inserted all the necessary information such as your name, email address and phone number?
Is your email address from a current and trusted email service like Gmail? (Avoid outdated or unknown email services)
Have you included links to your online profiles such as LinkedIn or your own website?
If you are sending your resume as a Google Doc, have you given the recipient the proper permissions to view it?
Is your LinkedIn profile aligned with your resume? (Hiring managers usually check out both and inconsistencies may catch their attention)
Have you vetted your online profiles to ensure all displayed content is professional and acceptable?
Is Your Resume Perfectly-Written?
Do you have an introductory executive summary focused on what you can offer the company? (You can also include a “Key Skills” section that summarizes your expertise)
Have you tailored your resume to the specific role (or industry) you are applying to? Have you highlighted/detailed the appropriate previous experiences?
Is your resume content written in a persuasive and engaging way?
Does your resume’s tone match the culture of the company to which you are applying?
Have you also included a short description of each of the companies you have joined?
Have you included your job title at each company?
Have you inserted an “areas of expertise” section?
Have you included both accomplishments and responsibilities for each position you have held?
Have you separated accomplishment from responsibilities?
Have you used metrics and verifiable data where possible to highlight your achievements concretely?
Does your resume show a career progression?
Does your resume have a category dedicated to your soft skills?
Have you included relevant information on your educational background?
Have you inserted links to a portfolio and samples of your work, if any?
Have you presented a clear case on your unique value proposition? (i.e. skills that make you stand out from other candidates or qualifications and experiences that make you uniquely qualified for the job)
Have you removed all the discriminatory information? Photograph, nationality, age, extra activities, salary expectations, reason for living, etc, are in most situations useless and discriminatory.
Is Your Resume Properly Formatted & Designed?
Is your resume format clear and straightforward? (Avoid too creative layouts and always remember to choose a format appropriate to the position you are applying to)
Have you used one colour maximum? Never use more than one colour on a resume. Black and white are NOT colours.
Have you removed all the logos, graphs and other charts? Such information confuses recruiters and is not ATS (applicant tracking system) optimised.
Have you used conventional formatting that makes content a lot easier to read?
Is your formatting consistent across all positions?
Have you selected a resume-friendly font?
Are your margins even?
Are all items properly aligned?
Are all your hyperlinks working?
Have you converted your resume into a format that allows all recipients to read it without having to download specific fonts or needing particular software?
Does your resume read from top to bottom exclusively? A resume shouldn’t have more than one single column for it to be easily readable.
Is Your Resume Perfectly Polished?
Have you removed your postal address? Such information is not necessary and can even lead to discrimination.
Have you included industry-specific keywords in your resume? (This is critical to getting past an automated system screening process!)
Have you used action verbs?
Have you edited it for brevity? We recommend 1 page for every 8-10 years of experience. This is a general rule though, it can be broken depending on your profile.
Have you removed any fancy jargon?
Have you removed previous jobs irrelevant to your professional goal?
Are your areas of expertise outstanding? (These days, it’s not exceptional to say that you are great at Microsoft Word or capable of using the internet.)
Have you performed a spell check and grammar check?
Is everything accurate and verifiable?
Finally, have you asked someone who hasn’t read your resume before to provide a feedback?
Did you remove the mention of any reference available? Recruiters are aware they can ask for referrals if needed. Also, recruiters will NEVER contact any name you have already inserted in your resume for obvious reasons.
