Would you give someone your business card without introducing yourself or saying something personal to them?
You wouldn’t.
For the exact same reason, it’s always better to send a personalized connection request to someone on LinkedIn, instead of sending a generic one clicking on “connect” and hoping for the best.
We’ve all received this common and non-personalized invitation template that LinkedIn provides, “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.”
And you don’t really want to be “common”, do you?
It’s not going to get you very far with a professional if you invite him to connect, without saying who you are or why you want to connect. It’s like asking a random person in a bar ” I’d like to be part of your contacts.” It sounds inappropriate.
For too long, it was impossible to customize a LinkedIn invitation on mobile.

STEP 1: FROM LINKEDIN’S MOBILE APP, GO TO THE PROFILE OF THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE CONNECTED WITH.

If you were to hit the blue “Connect” button at the bottom of the screen, the automated message would be sent. DO NOT CLICK THERE!
Instead, click on the box with the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

STEP 2: CLICK ON “PERSONALIZE INVITE”

STEP 3: WRITE YOUR PERSONALIZED MESSAGE AND CLICK SEND

Make sure you write a personalized message that explains clearly why you want to connect. Do not hesitate to start it with some kind words: we all like to receive compliments and it is definitely a great way to open a discussion.
If you want to connect with a recruiter, you can use this kind of message:
“Hi Samantha,
I found your profile on the Finance Elite LinkedIn Group and I’ve been impressed by your experience, well done! I’m a Head Of Finance specialised in Energy Industry with 15 years of experience and currently open to new opportunities. I’d love to chat about whether my background might be a fit for any of your openings, and I’d also be happy to connect you with other professionals in my field.
Regards,
Jon Doe”
Follow these steps from now onwards and you will develop your network!
