Here are six things you must think about before starting to send off applications to potential recruiters.
1. Set your goals
It’s necessary to think about what you expect from your career – short and long term.
Ask yourself:
What do I like doing?
What am I talented at?
Where do my skills and expertise lie?
What characteristics of a job matter to me?
2. Clean up your resume
Every single word on your resume needs to have a goal!
Clean your education section. If you’re a young professional without any real experience, your degree eclipses your school qualifications, which can be summarized to one line in most cases.
Modify your resume for each application can be a good idea. Examine the job description and amend your executive summary (Having one is necessary!) and bring out your most relevant experience.
Be straight forward and avoid using any fancy vocabulary. Recruiters receive many applications and they’re very busy, so lots of detail isn’t necessary. On top of this, it won’t make you stand out from all the other applications.

3. The search engine test
Have you ever tried to run a Google search on you? If you haven’t, go ahead and see what comes up. You might be surprised. Many recruiters run that kind of test, so it’s better for you to have a full control of what would come up!
4. Boost your employability
Taking a class or volunteering might be a good way to make a difference. Both show a strong work ethic and that you’re the kind of person who like to take the initiative. They’ll also add to your resume, providing talking points during your interview and potential networking opportunities.
5. Follow recruiters and head-hunters on LinkedIn
On LinkedIn, check out the pages of potential employers and head hunters and follow them. You’ll quickly receive news and job openings, but you will also learn more about the way they recruit. You’ll get a great glimpse of what the current job market is like and whether you would actually fit in with the culture of the company you’re following.
It is recommend to be active as well. For example, commenting or posting articles can give you a great exposure and land you opportunities.
6. Boost your network
Individuals are more likely to collaborate with professionals they know or people that are recommended. Let your contacts, friends, family and professional contacts know that you’re on the lookout for an opportunity, and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance in finding connections. Your profile on LinkedIn will help you develop your network, but don’t forget the other ways to meet with business people, such as conferences for example.
